On the last day of 2014, a New Year’s Eve Bell Ringing Ceremony will be held from 23:30 on December 31, 2014 until 00:30 on January 1, 2015 at Bosingak Belfry in Jongno-gu, Seoul.
First started in 1953, the bell-ringing ceremony ushers in the New Year by ringing the bell 33 times at the stroke of midnight. This celebrated tradition is one of the many customs handed down from the Joseon Dynasty. Aside from symbolizing the end of the year, it also represents the citizen’s hopes for a healthy, happy and prosperous 2015.
The mayor of Seoul, together with several citizen representatives, will participate in the ceremony. The big event will also feature interviews with citizens about their hopes, as well as multimedia performances and other special performances.
It is recommended to take public transportation as there will be road closures during the event from 23:00 on December 31, 2014, to 01:30 on January 1, 2015.
